Founder, Steve Bessette
Every homeowner has a bug story, but few are as compelling as Steven Bessette’s. Once a lawyer, an accountant and an expectant father, he transformed himself into the founder and president of EcoSMART Technologies – the world leader in botanical pest control solutions – on the belief that the methods used to kill bugs need not be toxic to people, pets or the environment.
With entrepreneurial zeal, but without scientific credentials, Bessette founded EcoSMART facing enormous challenges right off the bat. He took on the inertia of the chemical pest control industry and forced them, slowly but surely, to accept a positive change towards natural pest control solutions. Bessette’s initial motivation for finding natural solutions to pest control problems was paternal. With his wife Reenie expecting twins, safety issues were uppermost in their minds. Caffeine and unhealthy foods were the first to go, quickly followed by potentially toxic chemicals in and around their home. Then, serendipitously, one of Bessette’s legal clients introduced him to a man who had developed a concept for natural pest control. The rest, as they say, is history.
With a B.S. in accounting from the University of Rhode Island and a Juris Doctor from Boston University School of Law, Bessette was initially nervous about leaving the legal and accounting industries. He is, however, an entrepreneur at heart, and wanted desperately to find a way to make the world a better place for his children. Like most entrepreneurs, he first had to raise capital to form the company from friends and family. Then, he had to prove the efficacy of the product, and file patent applications. Finally, once the company was established and he had university data to support his claims, he had to source additional funds from high net worth individuals, small family funds, and institutional investors.
Not content with simply assisting in legal and accounting matters as the product went to market, Bessette took the helm and steered the company to its current success. Since EcoSMART began, the formulations have become ever more sophisticated. From one initial offering, the company has branched out into different formulations that tackle everything from ants and roaches to weeds and fungi.
Ultimately, Bessette believes that EcoSMART technologies is helping the parents of communities in the U.S. feel good about the foods they eat, the safety of their children and pets, and the health and well-being of their living environment and water supply.
“It’s like an insurance policy for your family,” says Bessette. “When it comes to your family, why take a chance?”
